Andrew Barclay 2320 (No. 22)

Number 22 is a product of Andrew Barclay’s works in Kilmarnock, works number 2320. It is an 0-4-0ST, with a short wheelbase.

It was delivered new to East Hetton Colliery on 10th Jan 1952 – initially numbered No. 54.

Whilst at East Hetton Colliery, the loco carried a red livery which it also carried for most of its time on the Yorkshire Dales Railway.

During preservation, it also carried the black livery of the Fishbourne Coke Works (the same style as other liveries of the time), but despite the loco working there it was never painted in this manner during its industrial days.

Although it is powerful (it has 14in. cylinders) it has not been deemed suitable for passenger work on a regular basis on the extended line to Bolton Abbey owing to its riding capabilities and coal capacity.

The locomotive has been based at Embsay for nearly 50 years, and after a change of ownership in 2008, the restoration of the locomotive was started, which was completed in October 2022.

It now sports it’s original red livery with NCB No. 4 Area No. 54 (in gold leaf) on its sides.
