Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Harvest of Steam
2005

(c) William Lister The 2005 event featured 6 steam engines:

  • No.65462, the J15 from the North Norfolk Railway more details...
  • Monckton No.1
  • Cranford No.2
  • 68005
  • No.140
  • Ann providing a shunting display.
  • D.2203 as rescue loco (not required).

The Harvest of Steam marked 40 years of since the Skipton - Ilkley line was closed in 1965 under the Beeching plan. To reflect this, there was a BR theme to the weekend with the North Norfolk Railway's J15, No.65462, being used alongside our own fleet which contained 68005 in BR livery.

Demonstration goods trains consisting of the SR brake van, three BR Vanwides, a lowmac (restored just in time), an LMS boxvan (repainted and through-piped leading up to the event), one of the ex-Octel tankers (freshly outshopped in BP Shell livery) and the Southern Railway BY (freshly outshopped in time for the event) were run. Normal service trains (steam hauled Mk.I stock in BR livery) and the vintage train using carriages from the Stately Trains fleet were also run. The spectacle of a GER train was something to behold!

Sentinel Ann was used in Embsay's Top Yard to provide a shunting display for visitors, using several restored wagons that were not used in the goods train this year.

Here are some of the photos from the event.

Monckton heads back towards Embsay after triple heading to Stoneacre to switch-in the signalbox. The crew are a very friendly bunch! When Monckton got back to Embsay, the J15 was ready to depart with the first passenger train, seen here passing Skibeden. The weather conditions were a little unfavourable to start off with!

A BR meeting took place at Bolton Abbey as the J15 entered with a passenger train as 68005 waited in the loop, ready to take the train back to Embsay. 68005 was never a BR engine, but was done up on the East Somerset Railway as one of the LNER / BR ones, taking the number just prior to the J94 series.

On the straight between Hambleton Cutting and Priors' Lane, and both the J15 and 68005 are seen on trains - goods and passenger respectively - but in the same wet conditions!

The sight so many people wanted to see did not disappoint - the J15 with Stephen Middleton's Stately Trains coaches - with GER No.14, GER No.37, GNoSR No.34 and L&YR No.1. Seen here pounding up the gradient having just passed under Priors' Lane bridge.

    (c) William Lister (c) William Lister Monckton miscellany as first of all she is seen with the passenger train, heading towards Embsay past the cottages at Draughton, and then returning towards Bolton Abbey with the goods train, coasting down the grade beyond Priors' Lane.

2005 was Cranford's last Harvest of Steam before major overhaul, and she went out in style! Here she is pounding up from hambleton cutting, onto the straight, heading towards Priors' Lane and beyond.

    (c) William Lister Bolton Abbey saw loco changes throughout the event. A train would arrive into the platform, and the loco held in the loop would be released to take the train back out to Embsay whilst the original train-loco moved into the loop to await the arrival of the next service. Here Cranford waits in the loop, having brought the Stately Train to Bolton Abbey, whilst Monckton waits to depart for Embsay with the train.

140 is not let out with the Stately Train very often as it is a larger loco that is not known for having the smoothest ride, but here she is seen climbing on the straight from Hambleton Cutting to Priors' Lane and there were no complaints from passengers.

    (c) Daniel Fergusson Having just passed Priors' Lane, the J15 coasts downhill towards Bolton Abbey with the Mk.I set.

68005 heads under Priors' Lane bridge with the Mk.I set, climbing past Stoneacre's Down distant signal, heading back to Embsay.

    (c) Daniel Fergusson A few moments later, and the Up train passes the same location - Monckton and the goods train, heading towards Bolton Abbey. Hopefully there will be funding to fully restore the SR brakevan over the next couple of years as the newness has certainly worn off the woodwork!

Again seen near Priors' Lane, the J15 storms up the bank with the goods train in tow as the weather finally seems to be showing signs of brightening up!

68005 is seen with the goods approaching Embsay from Bow Bridge. The fencing alongside the train surrounds the Down line over bridge 21 as there is now no decking here. 68005 enters Stoneacre Loop with the Mk.I passenger service.

When the goods train returned to Stoneacre on its way back to Bolton Abbey, 68005 was in charge, and is seen here waiting in the loop for the other train to make its way to Stoneacre from Bolton Abbey.

    (c) Daniel Fergusson (c) Daniel Fergusson The lighting really shows off the Stately Trains carriages very well as the J15 continues on its journey towards Bolton Abbey. The Stately Train proved very popular throughout the day, and right up to the last run.

140 makes a final departure from the loop to head back to Embsay. The LNWR style signal is the loop starter, although it doesn't actually contain anything of LNWR origin...

    (c) Daniel Fergusson As the box is switched out, the triple header is formed, pictured here just on the Bolton Abbey side of the bracket signal.

With the last train to depart from Bolton Abbey being double headed by Monckton and the J15, and 68005 being sent down as a pilot loco to switch out Stoneacre 'box, a triple header finished off the event. The train is seen here setting off from the bracket signal at Stoneacre after the 'box has been switched out.
