Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Thomas Events

Here are some of the photos which have been taken at previous 'Day out with Thomas' events. Click to enlarge.

(C) Tim Warner Thomas can usually be found on the coal dock at Embsay, so that the children can have a go on his footplate and speak to his driver and fireman. Here it is early morning as Thomas and Percy are getting up steam ready for a busy day.

(C) Stephen Walker Inside Thomas's cab, children (and their parents) can talk to his driver and fireman, as well as blow his whistle! One young visitor is seen here shattering the peace and quiet!
(c) Stephen Walker
(C) Stephen Walker Occasionally Thomas does come out from the coal dock into the station - here he sits in platform 2 waiting for the train to enter the station...

(C) Stephen Walker ...which it does, behind an engine from 'The Other Railway' - 68005.

(C) Stephen Walker Embsay station is usually a hive of activity, and here Percy is seen alongside 68005.
(c) Stephen Walker
(C) William Listerr August 2004 saw the first appearance of Diesel - D.3867 - lurking in the carriage sidings.
(c) William Lister
(C) Stephen Walker Even Jinty makes an appearance during his visit from the Worth Valley.
(c) Stephen Walker
(c) Bob Bonsall The Fat Controller (Sir Topham Hatt) and his dog (Gyp) make their appearance during Thomas events, much to the delight of the children and parents, who usually like to have their photos taken with them.
(c) Bob Bonsall
(C) David Umpleby Thomas is seen again on the coal dock as one of the trains passes by on its way to Bolton Abbey station. There are more children waiting for a chance to meet Thomas since the last photo! 68005's driver (Colin Davies) looks on.
(c) David Umpleby
(C) Tim Warner At Bolton Abbey station there is usually a large bouncy Thomas amongst other things, and this is seen here on the station lawn beside Mrs. Kyndley's Refreshment Rooms. This is very popular with the children!
(c) Tim Warner
(C) Stephen Walker Meanwhile, back at Embsay, Percy is on hand to provide some entertainment for the children in between helping other engines pull the heavy trains.
(c) Stephen Walker
(C) Stephen Walker Also in Embsay station is Thomas on this occasion, in the company of Maisy, otherwise known as the Class 107 DMU! This was an unusual occasion, as Thomas is almost always on the coal dock.
(c) Stephen Walker
(C) Tim Warner Percy and 140 get off to a good start from Bolton Abbey station during the Easter 2002 Thomas event.

(C) Tim Warner This photograph was taken at the same time as the one above, showing how many people were around at one of the quieter times of the day! The five coach trains were almost full with lots of expectant children, on their way to see Thomas at Embsay.

(C) Stephen Walker Percy is seen again at Embsay, this time in platform 1 in between trains on a very quiet day, or first thing in the morning!

(C) Dave Hebden Beatrice is seen leaving Embsay station with a train during one of the earlier Thomas events the railway held.

(C) Charles Boylan Primrose approaches Holywell Bridge with a train for Embsay as part of another Thomas event a few years ago.
(c) Charles Boylan
(C) Peter Walker Thomas is seen here leaving Bolton Abbey with a train for Embsay following a loco failure. Usually Thomas is at Embsay so that all the children can see him, but on this occasion he was employed to haul the trains.
(c) Peter Walker
(c) Bob Bonsall August Bank Holiday 2002 saw three locos hauling the trains. Here 68005 is seen passing Cranford at Stoneacre Loop - both with 5-coach trains.
(c) Bob Bonsall
(c) Bob Bonsall A little while later, Cranford passes Monckton in the same location. Cranford was in the process of being repainted immediately prior to the event, and so hauled trains in plain unlined green - with a brown chimney!
(c) Bob Bonsall
(c) Bob Bonsall Back at Embsay station the crowds await the arrival of the next train (departures are every 30 minutes), whilst looking around at the station itself, decked out with union flags.
(c) Bob Bonsall
(c) Bob Bonsall For entertainment at Embsay, there was a Punch and Judy show, which proved very popular judging from the following pictures!
(c) Bob Bonsall
(c) Bob Bonsall More of the Punch & Judy show, with one of the buses visible behind - Bertie is usually visiting for the Thomas events.
(c) Bob Bonsall
(c) Bob Bonsall You can even watch the outdoor performance from under cover - in a marquee.
(c) Bob Bonsall
(C) Stephen Walker Also at Embsay, the Waiting Room on platform 2 was open, showing Thomas videos as well as playing host to a model railway featuring Thomas and his friends.
