Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Harvest of Steam
2000 and earlier

(c) Andy Lister The Harvest of Steam events in the early days featured pretty much everything that could run, and one unusual feature was the mixed train that was run on several occasions. It is yet to be repeated...

Visiting engines during this time include Whiston, Demelza, the Middleton Railway's sentinel (and the 4F?).

Here are some of the photos from the events.

(c) Simon Gott Whiston visiting from Foxfield heads for Embsay near Skibeden Loop with a passenger train. The quarry is in the background.

(c) Simon Gott The Vintage Weekend events saw extensive use of the vintage train. Here Annie pulls the two GER 6-wheelers through Hambleton Cutting towards Bolton Abbey.
(c) Simon Gott.
(c) Simon Gott Whiston again, this time pulling up from Bolton Abbey through Hambleton Cutting - a reasonably stiff climb requiring some effort from the locos.
(c) Simon Gott.
(c) Simon Gott 68005 pulls up the hill towards Prior's Lane with a mixed goods consisting of some of the ballast hoppers and a few restored vans.
(c) Simon Gott.
(c) Simon Gott The same mixed goods is seen passing through Stoneacre, again with 68005, and the passenger train is also evident, including the Gresley Restaurant Car, serving Cream Teas.

(c) Simon Gott Whiston enters Stoneacre with the passenger train, passing the bracket signal. This is a very good location for photos, as can be judged from the number taken nearby.

(c) Simon Gott Annie and the vintage train depart from the loop on the way back to Embsay, with fireman Dave Outibridge keeping a close eye on the track.

(c) Simon Gott Whiston passes through the loop with the Gresley Restaurant Car again in evidence.

(c) William Lister In a view from the top of the quarry at Bolton Abbey, Cranford leaves the station with the GER 6-wheelers in tow - one of the frequent departures of the weekend.

(c) William Lister Cranford blasts up the bank through Hambleton Cutting with the mixed goods from Bolton Abbey. The GW Toad brakevan is at the head.

(c) William Lister 22 in black approaches Bolton Abbey through Hambleton Cutting with the mixed goods, consisting of the unrestored Shark brakevan on loan from the NRM.

(c) William Lister The 1999 Vintage Weekend saw Demelza visiting the line as a guest, but the loco was deemed unsuitable for running the line, and so made only a couple of trips before being confined to Embsay for light duties. Here she is seen heading through Hambleton Cutting with Cranford on the mixed goods.

Earlier Events

(c) Charles Boylan September 1984 saw a Harvest of Steam event, and these first photographs were taken at Skibeden Loop showing the various trains. This picture shows 69 and 22 at the head of a train (with blue / grey Mk 1), ready to depart for Embsay.
(c) Charles Boylan.
(c) Charles Boylan One very popular thing from the early Harvest of Steam events was the running of a mixed train, as seen here with 22 at the head.
(c) Charles Boylan.
(c) Charles Boylan The mixed train is seen again (possibly taken immediately before the previous photo), and consists of a War Dept. brake, a Southern BY and PMY (not sure which is which) and finally a Mk. 1 carriage, prior to being repainted.
(c) Charles Boylan.
(c) Charles Boylan Primrose and Darfield head a passenger train waiting to depart from the loop. Double heading was (and is) a feature of some of the trains, although there is no real need for it! One carriage has been repainted into maroon.

(c) Charles Boylan A close-up of the locos featured in the previous photo as they are prepared to depart.
(c) Charles Boylan.
(c) Charles Boylan An immaculate 69 waits with passenger train - shame it needs a very major overhaul.
(c) Charles Boylan.
(c) Charles Boylan 16" Hunslets Darfield and Beatrice prepare to depart. I would imagine this was the first appearance for Beatrice as the lining is not finished, and she does not appear in any other photos of the event.
(c) Charles Boylan.
(c) Charles Boylan Wheldale is seen on one of its first runs on the line, (still in green livery) with goods train in tow passing under the footbridge, much to the delight of the many people on it.
(c) Charles Boylan.
(c) Andy Lister Wheldale features in another Harvest of Steam here, this time in unlined red, suggesting it was taken in the late 80s (87?). Once more with a mixed goods, entering Embsay from Bow Bridge.
(c) Andy Lister.
(c) Andy Lister Slough Estates No. 5 passes through Embsay (without its footbridge) during the same event.

(c) Robert Milner Primrose enters platform 2 at Embsay with a mixed goods shortly after its overhaul to full working order.
