Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Steam Services

Monckton climbing out of Hambleton Cutting - (C) Tim Warner Trains are hauled by one of the railway's preserved steam engines, between Embsay and Bolton Abbey stations, and follow the timetable below. They consist of restored ex-BR Mk.I coaches from our fleet, usually including a Buffet Car (see below for details). On most days, a First Class Directors' Saloon will be attached to the train. If you wish to travel First Class you will need to buy a supplement ticket.

The Buffet Car: THE EMBSAY PERMANENT BOTTLED BEER FESTIVAL

Inside the Buffet Car. (C) Tim Warner In addition to the cafés on both stations, on most weekend running days the Buffet Car on the train will be open; on days when two trains are running, there will usually be a Buffet Car open on one of them. The Car will also open on occasional days in the school holidays, subject to availability of volunteer staff.

In addition to tea, coffee (four types currently on offer) canned soft drinks, fruit juices, crisps, biscuits and a limited range of sandwiches, the Buffet Car is licensed for the sale of alcoholic drinks (for consumption on the train only – sorry, no off-sales!)

Unfortunately, we can’t offer draught beer as we haven’t got the facilities to serve it. What we can offer is what we believe is the BIGGEST AND WIDEST SELECTION OF BOTTLED BEERS ON ANY HERITAGE RAILWAY.

The aim is that the Buffet Car will at all times carry NOT LESS THAN 30 DIFFERENT LOCALLY-BREWED BEERS.

Most of the beers will be sourced from small breweries within a 30-mile radius of the railway. We intend to keep trying different breweries – so every time you travel you should be able to try something different.

For those who prefer them, we also stock a smaller range of other drinks:-

  • UP TO 6 CONTINENTAL LAGERS
  • A RANGE OF BRITISH AND FOREIGN CIDERS
  • A SMALL (BUT HOPEFULLY GROWING) RANGE OF RED AND WHITE WINES
  • A WIDE RANGE OF SPIRITS, INCLUDING SUCH RARITIES AS A LANCASHIRE WHISKY

Disabled provision Car park spaces are reserved close to the station buildings for ease of access and there is a disabled toilet at Bolton Abbey Station. On the normal service trains there is a specially converted Disabled Saloon, which can be easily accessed via a ramp - the Station Staff or the guard will be willing to assist. The DMU service can accommodate wheelchairs, but the Vintage Trains do not have specific accommodation for wheelchairs. Please phone (01423) 561965 for further information about disabled access to the Vintage Trains.
