A Branchline Weekend / Mixed traction gala is in the advanced stages of planning for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. It will feature a total of 5 locomotives (subject to availability) from the steam and diesel fleets and will see trains running every thirty minutes from both stations. Directors Saloons will be attached to the passenger trains, the Stately Trains 6-wheelers will be in service, and goods trains will be run.

The basic timetable will be published here in the next month (it has been written), but the detailed timetable will only be available with the tickets. Tickets can be bought online for this event.

Sunday 25th March will see the Railway opening its doors to prospective volunteers for a 'behind-the-scenes' visit to see what goes on in order to operate the Railway.

Now that the New Year has well and truly started, did you make a New Year’s resolution, to get involved in an exciting project or put something back into the community? Have you always hankered after being a train guard, a ticket clerk or even an engine driver? If so, the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway is aiming to hold another volunteering open day in 2012, when it invites all potential volunteers to a day behind the scenes, learning the ins and outs of being a volunteer on this popular heritage steam railway.

The details of the day will appear here shortly, but there will be opportunities to experience the work of all the many varied departments of a heritage railway. This includes:

  • Carriage and Wagon who look after the railway’s passenger coaches,
  • Locomotive who look after the steam locos
  • Diesel & Plant who deal with diesel maintenance and overhauls
  • Permanent Way who look after the track (and lay more of it!)
  • The workshops which have recently been built where all sorts of restoration and maintenance activities take place
  • Signal and Telegraph who deal with maintaining and commissioning the signalling side of operations.
  • Operational staff such as those engaged in station duties, selling tickets, taking the roles of drivers of steam and diesel traction, firemen (and women!), guards, signalmen and so on.
  • The all-important retail and catering side!

The event is open to all, and information will be available on how to join the Trust on the day. For any further information, please contact the Railway’s Business Manager nearer the time: Stephen Walker at Bolton Abbey station, (01756) 701614 or e-mailed at enquiries AT embsayboltonabbeyrailway.org.uk.

Additional information about the sort of jobs we tackle can be found in the Departments section of the website.

Relive the nostalgia of 1940s Wartime Britain. The Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway steps back to the difficult times of Wartime Britain. Various re-enactment societies attend the railway over both days. Watch out for the Home Guard, Soldiers and Airmen returning home on leave and, of course, the long suffering civilians.

Wartime Weekend at Bolton Abbey Station. (C) Pete Walker A frequent service of trains will operate on both Saturday and Sunday, subject of course to enemy action. The railway has had special dispensation from the Ministry of Food to operate its refreshment rooms at Bolton Abbey and Embsay stations.

For further information, please telephone Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (01756) 710614 for general enquiries, or the Talking Timetable (01756)  795189.
