Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Goods Train Days

Today is a 2-train service with a GOODS TRAIN operating in addition to the normal steam-hauled services. This means that you can still ride on the steam-hauled train, but there is also the opportunity to travel in the guard's van on a Goods Train as we offer a more frequent service. The rostered locomotive for the goods will be published when it is confirmed for April 2016.

RIDE IN THE BRAKE VAN: Join the guard for a unique rail experience!
Goods Trains

There are very few opportunities to experience travel on a goods train anywhere in the world, and we are delighted to be able to offer this NEW for 2015. You will need to purchase a special supplementary ticket which enables you to ride in the guard's brake van on the goods train. It must be purchased on the day from the ticket office on a first-come-first-served basis for each train, and is subject to conditions. £5 per person per single journey.

Feel the warmth of the guard's stove; hear the clattering of the wagons in your train; see the Railway from a different perspective!

The Buffet Car: THE EMBSAY PERMANENT BOTTLED BEER FESTIVAL

Inside the Buffet Car. (C) Tim Warner In addition to the cafés, on most running days the Buffet Car on the steam-hauled train will be open; subject to availability of volunteer staff.

In addition to tea, coffee (four types currently on offer) bottled soft drinks (Fentimans), hot chocolate, hot bovril, fruit juices, crisps, biscuits and a limited range of sandwiches, the Buffet Car is licensed for the sale of alcoholic drinks (for consumption on the train only. Sorry, no off-train sales!)

Unfortunately, we can’'t offer draught beer as we haven’t got the facilities to serve it. What we can offer is a large selection of bottled beers, mostly sourced from small breweries within a 30-mile radius of the railway. We intend to keep trying different breweries– so every time you travel you should be able to try something different.

For those who prefer them, we also stock a smaller range of other drinks:-

  • LAGERS
  • CIDERS
  • A SMALL (BUT HOPEFULLY GROWING) RANGE OF RED AND WHITE WINES
  • A WIDE RANGE OF SPIRITS, INCLUDING SUCH RARITIES AS A LANCASHIRE WHISKY
  • Disabled provision Car park spaces are reserved close to the station buildings for ease of access and there are disabled toilets at both stations. On the normal service trains there is a specially converted Disabled Saloon, which can be easily accessed via a ramp - the Station Staff or the guard will be willing to assist. The Stately Trains do not have specific accommodation for wheelchairs. Please phone (01423) 561965 for further information about disabled access to the Stately Trains.
