Visiting Loco – Class 25 D7612

D7612 at Buckfastleigh. (South Devon Diesel Traction Group)

Courtesy of our friends at South Devon Diesel Traction (SDDT), Sulzer Type 2 (later Class 25) locomotive No D7612 will be visiting Embsay for the event.

No D7612 was built by British Railways (BR) at their Derby Works and first allocated to Glasgow Eastfield depot in April 1966, one of a class of 327 locomotives. It was one of thirteen allocated to the Scottish Region fitted with single line token catcher recesses in the cab sides under the Driver’s windows. However, within a year No D7612 moved south, initially to Derby in September 1967, then to Nottingham and Birmingham until allocated to Bescot in 1973. It worked for several years from Bescot until being placed into store (unserviceable) in April 1982 at Derby with power unit problems. Following a power unit change, it was restored to service by BR at Bescot in May 1982. During all of this time, it was deployed on a wide variety of passenger and freight work.

No 25 262, as it had become by then, went back north in 1985 and was allocated to Carlisle Kingmoor. It was renumbered as No 25 901 in December 1985 as part of a sub-class of twelve locos for use on the industrial minerals and chemical sectors of BR. All of the Class 25s were withdrawn in 1987, with No 25 901 being officially withdrawn on 16 March 1987, though despite that loco worked on past this date on trip work and is thought to be the last Class 25 to work a normal BR service towards the end of April 1987.

Initially being purchased by the Harry Needle Railroad Company, following a spell at the East Lancashire Railway, the loco was purchased in 1999 by SDDT and moved to their base at Buckfastleigh. Since then, it has worked both on its ‘home’ railway and made several visits on hire to other heritage railways, most recently to the Spa Valley. It currently carries its original livery of two-tone green as No D7612.

The visit of No D7612 to Embsay is the highlight of this year’s Diesel Gala & Beer Festival, one of the most popular events in our annual calendar. Joining No D7612 at the event will be Class 20 No D8110 and Class 37 No 37294, and other shunters within the Embsay-based fleet, in a wholly diesel worked timetable over the three days.
