OPERATINGThe operating department of the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway is responsible for the running and staffing of the trains and stations.
The operating department is run by the Operations Committee who are group of experienced operating staff who meet monthly to discuss matters concerning the operating department. The trains and station are staffed solely by volunteers and work to a roster basis. Working in the operating department can be very rewarding for volunteers who enjoy meeting people and are good at dealing with the public. There is a brilliant team spirit within the department and any new volunteers are given the warmest welcome. New volunteers who join the department follow training routes from Station Duties (Booking Office and Platform Staff) through to grades such as Guard and Signalman. Volunteers are eligible to train for Guard and Signalman after a period of time working on the railway. Whatever your level of fitness, there is a task for you to undertake, be it Booking Office for those who struggle with physical jobs thorough to Guard and Signalman. An experienced member of staff gives full training on all procedures and safety matters to new volunteers and we hope that they soon feel part of the team! So join us! If you fancy helping in the operating department, contact the Volunteer Liaison Officer and you can be assured of a warm welcome as new volunteers to the department are always welcomed to ease the burden on the other staff.
