Keeping working members informed

Are we ready for another Season?

Easter approaches
With the Easter Thomas event coming soon, here are some ideas on what needs to be done.

On the run up to the bank holiday, a lot of work needs to be done on cleaning the coaching stock and making sure that the stations are all spruced up. Any of you who are willing to help will be most welcome.

During the weekend, much help will be needed on all the mundane jobs which bring the money in - working on the gate, in the car parks and ticket offices, on the present stall, buffets, shops etc. Don't leave it all to the regulars, give a hand, even if only for one day. Why not get together with a few friends and take over a task?

If you are thinking of spending the weekend doing other work in the sheds etc, think again. People who are working their fingers to the bone on essential tasks find it galling to see others just strolling about the site in overalls! So make it fund-raising only, eh?

Inter-rail Passes
Heritage Railway Association Inter-Rail Passes 2003/4 These are now available for period 1st March 03 to 28th Feb 04 at a price of £15 each. Available to working members, they provide free travel for passholder plus one person on heritage lines around UK. Excellent value! Send cheque (payable to HRA) to: D Barlow, 1 Southgate, Fulwood, Preston, PR2 3HX.

People
Tim Warner passed his signalling test over the Christmas holidays and has joined the signalling team. Congratulations from all of us.

Steve and Andrea now have a baby girl, Hannah, who was born on 8th December weighing 7lb 9oz. Steve is progressing well with his driving course for Arriva, having passed his rules and started the traction course; he hopes to pass out as a driver this June or July.

Dave Ibbotson recently had an accident in Keighley Road, Skipton. He was knocked off his bike one Thursday morning by an artic. Although the bike ended up a figure-of-eight, Dave escaped with a broken toe, bruised ribs and a bump on the head.

Dave and Anne Oughtibridge were recently involved in an emergency when their neighbour's flat caught fire. Together with the elderly man's son, they helped him to safety.

RAB Construction have recently received an award for the refurbishment of the weigh house. There will soon be another plaque for the railway to display. The firm are also working on a new hut for the proper storage of gas, in order to comply with regulations, and have work to do on the water column at Embsay.

Loco News
Work on No 8, the new 'Thomas the Tank Engine', is progressing well, and the engine could be out by Easter.

Annie is up for her ten-yearly boiler examination and should be out of service for overhaul for a couple of years.

Cranford needs work on her firebox, so should be out of action for some time.

Mog is currently our main engine for work in the run up to Easter.

Shop news
The refurbishment of the shop is coming on apace; two windows have been unblocked, making the shop lighter, and the fireplace may come into use soon. There is now a test track for railway models.

Bachmann have recently announced several new items including some which were requested in the survey last summer - LMS Jinty 3F, Class 20, and Classes 40, 44, 45 and 46. The GWR 45xx Prairie is also expected shortly. No doubt the shop will be stocking these.

A suggestion
Why not adults-only coaches? (I don't mean it like that!). Many people, including those who like kids, would prefer to travel in an environment free of other peoples' boisterous kids - and sticky marks on windows! I think it would prove popular.

Wanted
The bric-a-brac shop needs more stock. If you have anything you can spare - but not clothes or furniture, please - bring it along. The shop is raising money for the benefit of the railway, please contribute. Don't forget that the engine shed and coal dock always need rags for cleaning material; some charity shops will give away unwanted clothes if you ask nicely!
